Making Sure Children and Parents Receive Fair Treatment
The State of Idaho courts believe that every child is entitled to support from both of his or her parents. While the process for calculating child support is relatively straightforward, mistakes can be made that can cause parents and children alike to suffer unnecessarily.
If you need to set child support payments, modify an existing arrangement, or advance a motion for child support enforcement, a knowledgeable lawyer can help make sure you receive fair treatment.

Calculating Child Support in Idaho
Child support payments are calculated according to a mathematical formula that was adopted by the Idaho Supreme Court. This formula takes into account both parents' incomes, the parenting time arrangement, the number and age of the children to be supported, living expenses and other variables.
Often, there can be disagreement over which deductions a parent can make and how much income should be attributed to either parent.
- On one extreme, some parents will try to hide income to lower their child support payments. They can face serious consequences if this behavior is discovered.
- On the other extreme, there are some parents who are unemployed but who have the ability to get a job and provide support. Judges will often force them to pay child support at a level they would be able to pay if they were employed up to their full potential.
